LEAGUE ACTIVITIES CAN:
1

PROVIDE A FOUNDATION FOR THE ARTS

Many of our students have had no prior experience with the performing arts before our program. Our coursework gives students the tools they need to approach performance for the first time and if they're already skilled- challenges them to go deeper.

2

LINK TO THE WORK ALREADY HAPPENING IN THE CLASSROOM

Our curricula are custom made for each of our schools and have both the teachings of Keith Johnstone and other famous improvisers at their center while also linking strongly back to the English and Language Arts Common Core Standards.

3

CREATE OPPORTUNITES FOR COLLABORATION

The RI Interscholastic Improv League's primary service comes in placing a teaching artist at one of our participating schools. They work together with a professional educator to make a curriculum that both teaches students about the English and Language Arts Common Core standards about creating narratives while also showing them how to create their own improvised theater. They then execute that curriculum either afterschool or during the school day depending on what works best for their community. At the end of our year long programs, our students form teams and perform together in a series of collaborative, interscholastic and completely improvised public shows using a format called Theatresportstm.

However, the League is adaptable and changeable to what the participating school community needs. We tailor our work to support any existing programs that a school may have or wish to start. As a result, we've done everything from exploring the world of improvised music for a conference presentation and performance at Rhode Island College to supporting students with special needs as they experience the arts for the first time. We also work with the professional educators at our participating schools to support their efforts in the classroom and provide them with new tools to reinforce their already formidable teaching skill sets.

    HOW WE           WORK

In class, our students learn to work together generously to create improvised narratives. At our Theatresportstm  matches, they make innovative and personal improvised theater with their peers from all over Rhode Island. Through our affiliation with the International Theatresports Institute, the door is open for them to meet and be inspired by peers at youth and professional theaters all over the world!
