ABOUT

MISSION AND HISTORY

The Rhode Island Interscholastic Improv League is an organization made up of artists and participating Rhode Island high schools that collaborate to learn about and create improvised theater. Students from participating schools perform an improvised format called TheatresportsTM together generously using all the creativity of arts-rich lateral thinking and incorporating all the heat of a high-level sports event. Our participating schools and students receive a new approach to meeting the Common Core standards for English Language Arts through learning the art of creating improvised theater.

Starting with our pilot school in 2012-2013, we've since grown to 5 participating schools with a strong network of partners. We do not require any of our students, schools or educators to make any payments for the work that we do. Rather, our work is supported financially by our partners, ticket sales to our events and donations from the community at large. We are recognized as a 501 (c)(3) non profit corporation by the IRS, which makes any gifts tax deductible. Our work in the current academic year has also been supported in part by a generous grant from the Rhode Island State Council for the Arts.

The League is a proud member of the International Theatresports Institute which is a worldwide network of improvised theatre companies all performing in formats inspired by the teachings of Keith Johnstone. Through them, we have access to a nearly limitless supply of artists, information and ideas available for our schools and students.

We also offer free one time introductory improv workshops to interested high schools and have both taught and scheduled a number of them around the state. If you are an educator at a Rhode Island high school, you may contact us here or via social media to schedule a session with our team of instructors.
